●Basic Functions of Polyols:
Because they contain hydroxyl groups (-OH), they can form hydrogen bonds with water, helping to retain moisture and thus assisting in moisturizing.
Because they contain hydroxyl groups (-OH), they can form hydrogen bonds with other ingredients, helping to dissolve them and thus acting as a solubilizer.
●Other Special Functions:
Due to the different structures of different polyols, they can also create different effects in cosmetics.
For example, they can help inhibit microbial growth (reducing water activity or affecting the outer layer of microbial proteins), provide a warming sensation (releasing heat upon contact with water), act as thickeners, and emulsifiers.
●Basic Functions of Preservatives: They reduce microbial growth and primarily reduce the risk of rapid product spoilage due to secondary contamination during consumer use (repeated contact with the bottle opening/closing device). Therefore, preservatives are necessary, and generally, as long as they comply with regulatory restrictions, they are safe.
●What are the differences between preservatives?
The main function remains unchanged, but options are available depending on individual constitution, formulation, application method, and product type. These options include water-soluble, oil-soluble, alcohol-soluble, traditional (preservatives listed on the front table of cosmetic regulations), and novel (preservatives not listed on the front table of cosmetic regulations).
