1,2-Hexanediol is a polyol currently not classified as a preservative, but rather as a humectant and penetration enhancer. Typically, an addition of around 5% is sufficient to provide a noticeable preservative effect. Therefore, many brands use this ingredient as a substitute for preservatives, claiming their products are preservative-free. However, the antibacterial effect of this type of ingredient is relatively passive, and it's difficult to control whether the product becomes contaminated after opening. For product preservation after opening, its antibacterial effect cannot compare to that of true preservatives. Furthermore, because the preservation environment after opening differs significantly from that when sealed, the shelf life of preservative-free products tends to be conservative.
Cosmetic Grade 1,2-Hexanediol

Efficacy and Uses
1,2-Hexanediol is generally used as a moisturizer. However, when added to skincare products, it has antibacterial, moisturizing, and solvent properties, without causing any negative effects on human health.
What are the dangers of 1,2-Hexanediol?
First, "There is no correlation between the degree of irritation from hexanediol in a product and its concentration. No skin allergic reactions, phototoxicity, or photosensitivity were observed in skin allergy tests for hexanediol."
Second, a study published in the journal *Contact Dermatitis* on the use of 1,2-Hexanediol in eczema patients showed that its use did not significantly increase skin irritation.
Third, large oral doses of 1,2-Hexanediol may pose a risk similar to alcohol poisoning, but it is crucial to note that this refers to large oral doses.
Uses and Dosage
1,2-Hexanediol, due to its good solubility, non-corrosiveness, antibacterial, and moisturizing properties, is used in fine chemicals (such as cosmetics, high-grade inks, high-grade paints, and high-grade adhesives) and pharmaceutical industries. It can promote moisturizing and penetration. When added at a concentration of around 5%, it has a preservative effect.
