  •  A high-purity, colorless, and odorless polyol preservative synergist.

  •  Works synergistically with preservatives to combat bacteria and mold, reducing the amount of general preservatives needed.

  •  Can be added to sunscreen products to increase water resistance and prolong sun protection.

Ingredients

1,2-Pentylene Glycol

Suggested proportion: 1-5%

What are polyols?

Polyols are alcohols containing two or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) in their molecules. Common ingredients in cosmetics include glycerin, propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), etc.

Basic functions of polyols:

Because they contain hydroxyl groups (-OH), they can form hydrogen bonds with water, helping to retain moisture and thus assisting in moisturizing.

Because it contains hydroxyl groups (-OH), it can form hydrogen bonds with other ingredients, aiding in dissolution, and thus can act as a solubilizer.

Other special functional properties:

Due to the different structures of various polyols, they can also create different effects in cosmetics, such as helping to inhibit microbial growth (reducing water activity or affecting the outer layer of microbial proteins), providing a warming sensation (releasing heat energy upon contact with water), acting as a thickener, emulsifier, etc.

Basic functions of preservatives: reducing microbial growth, primarily reducing rapid product spoilage due to secondary contamination during consumer use (repeated contact/opening/closing of bottles). Therefore, the addition of preservatives is necessary, and normally, as long as they comply with regulatory restrictions, they are safe to use.

Differences between preservatives:

While their primary function remains the same, the choice depends on individual constitution, formulation, application method, and product type. They are categorized as water-soluble, oil-soluble, alcohol-soluble, traditional (preservatives listed on the front of cosmetic regulations), and novel (preservatives not listed on the front of cosmetic regulations).

1,2-Pentanediol:

A high-purity, colorless, and odorless polyol preservative synergist. It works synergistically with preservatives to combat bacteria and mold, reducing the amount of common preservatives needed while enhancing preservative efficacy.

At a concentration of 5%, it can achieve the effect of a preservative alone in cosmetics.

Besides its role as a preservative, pentanediol also possesses excellent moisturizing properties. Due to its structure's similarity to surfactants, it can act as a co-emulsifier in O/W emulsions, helping to reduce emulsion particle size, resulting in smoother application and a better skin feel. Pentanediol also has water-resistant properties, allowing it to be added to sunscreen products to increase water resistance and prolong sun protection.

Main Ingredient: Pentylene Glycol

Usage/Application: For addition to or formulation of cosmetics.

Suggested Ratio for Skincare Product Preparation: 1-5%

1. Dissolve in water.

2. Preservative System: 1+1>2; it is recommended to use a combination of preservatives for safety.
