From a raw material safety perspective, caprylyl glycol is primarily used in cosmetics as a skin conditioning agent, hair conditioning agent, moisturizer, and preservative.
Caprylyl glycol belongs to the 1,2-glycol class of ingredients used in cosmetics. This class of compounds possesses skin and hair conditioning properties. It has a long history of use; according to a CIR report, the highest safe concentration of caprylyl glycol used in 1721 leave-on products was 5%, and there are no safety issues with its use at current formulation concentrations.
Existing safety data on 1,2-glycols suggest that this class of compounds exhibits low systemic toxicity; for caprylyl glycol, the acute oral LD50 is >2 g/kg, indicating low acute toxicity. Oral reproductive/developmental toxicity results for propylene glycol, as well as C4 and C6 carbon-chain diols, were negative, and it can be inferred that these results also apply to longer-chain glycols (caprylyl glycol is C8). Furthermore, 1,2-glycols have been reported not to have significant genotoxicity or carcinogenicity, nor significant skin irritation, sensitization, or photosensitivity.
Caprylyl glycol is not among the prohibited or restricted substances in China and the EU, so there are no specific limits on its usage in cosmetics.
If you experience skin burning after using caprylyl glycol, are you using a cosmetic containing caprylyl glycol or using caprylyl glycol alone? Regardless, please stop using it immediately, wash your skin, and seek medical attention if the redness is severe or persistent. Using caprylyl glycol alone is not advisable. If it is a cosmetic containing caprylyl glycol, the influence of other ingredients cannot be ruled out, and it may be caused by an allergen.
Field: Daily chemical preservatives Subsequent products: Cosmetics
Applications: Used in cosmetics as a moisturizer with antibacterial activity; used in bath and shampoo products (1,2-caprylyl glycol). Applications: Used in cosmetics as a moisturizer with antibacterial activity; used in bath and shampoo products as a thickener and foam stabilizer.
Caprylyl glycol multifunctional liquid formulas, in addition to enhancing the moisturizing function of skincare products, also have excellent antimicrobial activity, helping to enhance the efficacy of preservative systems.
